WHAT MOBILE LEARNING IS: Mobile learning is the use of any mobile or wireless device for learning on the move. It is any service or facility that supplies a learner with general electronic information and educational content that aids their acquisition of knowledge, regardless of location and time (Lehner & Nosekabel, 2002). Kinshuk (2003) in quoting Vavoula and Sharples (2002) suggested that there are three ways in which learning can be considered mobile: (1) learning is mobile in terms of space; (2) in different areas of life; and (3) with respect to time. These definitions, according to Kinshuk (2003), suggest that mobile learning systems should be capable of delivering educational content to learners anytime and anywhere they need it. Mobile learning, as a novel educational approach, encourages flexibility; students do not need to be a specific age, gender, or member of a specific group or geography, to participate in learning opportunities. Restrictions of time, space and place have been lifted. HOW IT CAN BE BETTER INTEGRATED INTO COURSES IN SCHOOL OF EDUCATION 1. The School of Education can enter into contractual agreement with the network providers to procure relatively inexpensive mobile phones capacitated to take mobile learning application, which can then be distributed to the students in their schools at subsidized price. 2. Designated learning centres can be established at strategic locations in the school, providing a place where a facilitator can attend to the needs of the nomads. Other materials, such as learning manuals and programme syllabi, can also be distributed from these strategic locations. 3. Facilitators, via a simple call using their mobile telephones, can call to track their students’ progress in their studies, and to determine and address any problems that any learner – whether they are stationary or mobile – typically face in mastering the course materials and learning objectives. Similarly, the learners can also be regularly encouraged to call the course facilitator on their mobile phones, should they encounter any problems or require clarification or help. Facilitators are also encouraged to call and network with their fellow facilitators. Use of mobile phone in one’s native language, helps to establish a cordial and hence, sustainable learning atmosphere based on trust and collegiality. 4. Bringing iPads and Apps into Lesson Plans The teachers should make it a part of their preparation for a lesson to include the use of iPads for reference to the students. That is, to direct the students to more reference materials. In other words, it means teaching and learning using iPads in the classroom. 5. Using MP3 players to engage students so that they will listen to audio materials of the courses offered in the school of education. 6. Digital divide, closing the gap Use of mobile technology by students is booming, but an "app gap" is growing between children from low-income and high-income families. So, the earlier school should close the gap by making provision of e-learning and e-library centres for the less privileged. 7. Orientating of teachers in the school of education about the nitty-gritty of mobile learning 8. Encouragement of the use of software by teachers as instructional or educational aids, course materials which students should possess for later and individual learning. 9. The posting of course materials of courses offered in the school of education will also help to integrate the mobile learning. 10. Teachers should get address, sites, accounts, blogs, etc. where students could get more materials for certain topics or the courses at large for efficacy and better knowledge. This will enhance scholarship.
